How to use the honeymoon budget calculator in 4 steps

    1. Choose up to three places. Pick where you're going and how many nights you'll spend in each. Add your honeymoon dates if you have them, so each place uses its own season.

    2. Say how you'd like to travel. Choose simple, comfortable or special, and how many travelers are going. The stay, food, getting around and things to do change with your answers.

    3. Add what only you know. Type your flights, insurance, passport and visa costs, medicine, tips and anything else. They start at nothing: we never guess a price for them.

    4. Compare it with your number. Type what you'd like to spend and see which places fit. Signed in, add the total to your wedding budget as one Honeymoon line.

    How the estimate works

Each place's costs come from an official government travel rate: the most that government pays its own staff for a night's lodging and a day's meals and small costs. These are not hotel prices or trip prices, so we multiply them by our own rules and call the result a Merriwell estimate.

    • Where you stay: the lodging rate × 0.6 (simple), 1 (comfortable) or 2 (special), for one room for every two travelers, per night.
    • Food and drink: the meals rate × 0.7, 1 or 1.6, per person per day.
    • Getting around: the meals rate × 0.25, per person per day.
    • Things to do: the meals rate × 0.3, 0.5 or 1, per person per day.
    • Flights, insurance, passports, visas, medicine, tips and anything else are yours to type. They are nothing until you do.

A resort villa, in the Maldives or Bora Bora for example, can cost far more than "special".

We round each rate to a whole dollar, so every line is a sum you can check.

    Where the numbers come from

    What your own costs add

Flights are usually the biggest cost we leave to you, and they change by the day, so we don't guess them. Look them up, type what you find, and the total moves. Insurance, passport and visa costs, vaccines and tips work the same way. Anything you've already booked, type the booked price and we use it instead of our estimate.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a honeymoon cost?
Couples say they spend about $5,300 (The Knot, 2024 weddings) to $6,500 (Honeyfund, 2026). What yours costs depends on where you go, how long you stay and how comfortably you travel. For two at the comfortable level, ten nights comes to $6,250 in Bali, $6,720 in Lisbon and $11,170 in Rome, before flights, insurance and the rest, which you type in yourself. Those figures come from official government travel rates, so they're a Merriwell estimate, not a quote.
    Is $5,000 a lot for a honeymoon?
That's a little under what couples say they spend: about $5,300 (The Knot, 2024 weddings) to $6,500 (Honeyfund, 2026). Before flights and your own costs, $5,000 covers about 8 nights in Bali, 7 in Lisbon or 4 in Rome for two at the comfortable level. Flights usually come out of the same number, so type yours in the calculator to see what is left for the nights.
Is $10,000 enough for a honeymoon?
That depends on where you go and for how long. Before flights and your own costs, $10,000 covers about 16 nights in Bali, 14 in Lisbon or 8 in Rome for two at the comfortable level. A resort villa in a place like the Maldives or Bora Bora can cost far more than our "special" level, so for those, check real prices before you rely on an estimate.
What does a two-week honeymoon cost?
Fourteen nights for two at the comfortable level comes to $8,750 in Bali, $9,408 in Lisbon and $15,638 in Rome, before flights, insurance and the rest. Choose "simple" or "special" in the calculator to see how much the level changes it, and add your honeymoon dates so each place uses the rate for its season.
How far ahead should we book a honeymoon?
Our checklist puts "Plan and book your honeymoon" about 7 months before the wedding, once your date is firm. Check your passports at the same time: if you're traveling abroad, they should be valid for at least six months after your trip. If you add your honeymoon dates here, the checklist's packing step moves to the day before you leave.
Where do the numbers come from?
Each place is priced from an official government travel rate: the most that government pays its own staff for a night's lodging and for a day's meals and small costs (the US State Department, the US General Services Administration and the US Defense Travel Management Office, read in October 2026). They are not hotel prices or trip prices, so we apply our own simple rules and call the result a Merriwell estimate. Each rate is rounded to a whole dollar so every line is a sum you can check.
Why aren't flights in the estimate?
Flight prices change by the day and depend on where you fly from, so we don't guess them. Type what you find: there's a plain link to Google Flights, and nothing on this page is an affiliate link. The same goes for insurance, passports (the official fee for a standard adult renewal is $130), visas, medicine and tips.
Can a trip cost more than the estimate?
Yes. A government rate is a ceiling for official travel, not what a trip costs. Resort-only places can cost far more, and a rate can be years old: the page for each place says when its source last changed it. Where you've booked something, type the booked price and the calculator uses it in place of ours.
