Winter wedding colours

Winter wedding colour schemes with named colours and hex codes, the flowers in season, and a free generator to make your own.

Winter weddings feel candlelit, rich and quiet. It gets dark early, so lighting and candles do much of the decorating. The 16 palettes below are named, with hex codes, and each one opens in the editor so you can lock, shuffle and change it.

Start with the generator: it is set to winter shades. Take the quiz if you want your own style, or pick a palette you like and make it yours.

Your style

Garden romantic

Soft blooms, trailing greenery and light that feels like late afternoon.

A second colour for details: stationery, a few flowers, napkins.

  • Neutral

    Snowfall

    Hex code: #FFFFFF

Paper, tablecloths, backgrounds: the quiet one.

  • Greenery

    Eucalyptus

Text on your paper

Your main colour is a little pale for text on your neutral (3.0 to 1; 4.5 to 1 is easier to read). A deeper shade, #8f6775, would read clearly.

In season for winter

Amaryllis, Hellebores, Ranunculus, Holly and ivy, Eucalyptus, Pine and rosemary, Snowdrops, Paperwhite narcissi, Anemones, Viburnum, Winter foliage, Early daffodils, Hyacinths

A guide only. A florist will know what is growing near you.

A veil shade to look at

With a neutral like yours, Off White is the veil shade we would look at first. Colours look different on every screen, so see it in person where you can. We never promise an exact match. Your palette leans cool, so a white with no yellow in it sits well.

Your board

Your style, your five colours, the flowers in season and the pictures you picked, on one page. Show it to a florist or a stationer.

About the flowers and the names

    • The colour names are ours, each given with its plain hex code.
    • Flowers in season are a guide written for this page and checked by hand.

Three ways to build winter wedding colours

    • Evergreen and gold: Bottle Glass or Ivy with Marigold, Clotted Cream and Antique Gold feels warm on the coldest day.
    • Navy, blush and silver: Navy Night with Blush Petal and Cool Silver is crisp and classic.
    • Berry and frost: Cranberry with Ice Blue and Snowfall; pine and holly foliage make the colours feel seasonal without a single bauble.

    Winter wedding flowers

Amaryllis, Hellebores, Ranunculus, Holly and ivy, Eucalyptus, Pine and rosemary, Snowdrops, Paperwhite narcissi, Anemones, Viburnum, Winter foliage, Early daffodils.

In season from December to February. A florist will know what is growing near you.

Winter colours for the wedding party

    • Velvet and heavier fabrics in emerald, burgundy or navy.
    • Dark suits, a waistcoat or a wool coat for the photographs outside.
    • Plan for coats and somewhere warm between the ceremony and the party.

What colours to wear to a winter wedding

    • White, ivory and cream are usually the couple's, so most guests leave them to the couple. The same goes for a very pale champagne.
    • If the invitation names the wedding party's colour, wear something different.
    • In some traditions all black is for mourning and all white is for the couple, and red can be the couple's colour at some Chinese and Indian weddings. If you are not sure, ask, or check the invitation for a dress code.
    • Otherwise, wear what you feel good in. Colours that suit the season are always welcome.

How to choose winter wedding colours

    1. Start with one thing you love. A season, a colour, a photo of the venue or a dress, or nothing yet. Any of them is a fine place to begin.

    2. Pick a few pictures. Three short rounds. Choose two to four in each, and the quiz names your style.

    3. Check the five colours. You get a main colour, an accent, a neutral, greenery and a metal, each with our name and a hex code.

    4. Change what you like. Lock the ones you love and shuffle the rest, make any of them lighter or darker, or choose from about 120 named colours.

    5. Share it. Make a board for your florist or stationer, or send a link to your partner and see what you both chose.

    Questions people ask

What are the best winter wedding colours?
Rich or frosty ones: emerald and gold, navy and blush, burgundy and pine, silver and ice. Candlelight warms deep colours and makes pale ones glow.
    Is a winter wedding cheaper?
Often, because fewer couples marry in the coldest months and venues have more free dates. Your venue sets its own prices, so ask for the dates they have.
Which flowers are in season for a winter wedding?
Amaryllis, Hellebores, Ranunculus, Holly and ivy, Eucalyptus, Pine and rosemary and Snowdrops are at their best. A florist will know what is growing near you.
What is the weather like for a winter wedding?
London: usually 8°C by day and 2 to 3°C at night, with rain on about 1 day in 3. Bath: usually 8°C by day and 2°C at night, with rain on about 1 day in 2. These are averages from 30 years of records, not a forecast.
How many colours should a winter wedding have?
Five is plenty: a main, an accent, a neutral, greenery and a metal. Our winter palettes above follow that pattern, and you can change any of them in the editor.

    Find your veil shade

Britten's veils come in Ivory, Off White, Pale Ivory and Champagne. Your palette will suggest one; colours look different on every screen, so see it in person where you can.
