Passport name change after marriage: which form, what it costs

Your passport has to match the name you travel under. Pick the right form, send it after your honeymoon, and book your flights in the name on the passport you'll carry.

General information, not legal advice. Rules change, and the official page has the final word. Checked October 16, 2026.

The honeymoon rule

Book your flights in your current name, the name on the passport you'll carry. Carry your marriage certificate. Change your passport after you're home: once you apply, you can't travel on the old one.

The checklist holds the passport step until the day after you're home, if you add your honeymoon dates.

What to send

  • Your most recent passport
  • A certified copy of your marriage certificate (originals come back to you by mail)
  • A new passport photo

Your current passport goes in with the form, so you can't travel on it until the new one arrives. If your certificate isn't in English, check the form's instructions for what else it wants.

Your honeymoon and your passport

  • Book your flights in the name on the passport you'll carry.
  • Until you apply, your current passport works. Carry your marriage certificate.
  • Once you apply for a new one, you can't use the old one for travel.
  • If you're not going abroad, the name on the ID you'll show at the airport is what counts. If your new license arrives before you fly, book in the new name.

TSA PreCheck

Contact the enrollment provider you applied with, or visit an enrollment center. A name change can take up to 45 days, and until it's done you can't use PreCheck. Your airline booking must match the name on your PreCheck application exactly.

  • An original or certified copy of your marriage certificate (notarized copies aren't accepted)
  • Your ID

Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI

CBP gives two answers, so here are both: its FAQ says to visit an enrollment center, and the Trusted Traveler Programs FAQ says to ask online at help.cbp.gov (topic "Trusted Traveler Programs", then "Change my name due to marriage/divorce/legal"). Until your new passport is in the system, you can't use Global Entry.

How to change your name on your U.S. passport in 5 steps

  1. Order certified copies of your marriage certificate. The passport office wants a certified copy, and your original comes back to you by mail. Order a few, so Social Security and your license office can start while your passport is away.

  2. Pick your form. Passport issued less than a year ago: form DS-5504, free. Otherwise form DS-82 by mail, if you can renew (issued in the last 15 years, when you were 16 or over, and undamaged). If not, form DS-11 in person.

  3. Wait until you're home. Your current passport goes in with the form, so you can't travel on it until the new one arrives. If you're flying on your honeymoon, send the form after you're back.

  4. Send the form. Include your most recent passport, a certified copy of your marriage certificate and a new passport photo. A renewal costs $130. Expedited service costs $60 more (22 CFR 22.1).

  5. Update TSA PreCheck and Global Entry. A name change at TSA PreCheck can take up to 45 days, and your airline booking must match the name on your PreCheck application exactly. Global Entry needs your new passport to be in the system first.
