Wedding thank you card wording: examples for every gift

Keep track of who gave what, write each note from what you know, and see who is left to thank.

Draft a starter note

Fill in a few things and get a plain note you can copy. Nothing you type here is saved or sent anywhere.

Leave it blank if you are not sure what it was.

Did they come to the wedding?

Your starter note

Dear Will and Jo, Thank you so much for the blue vase. We will think of you every time we use it. We hope you are keeping well. Thank you again for thinking of us. It means more than we can say. With love, Alex and Sam

A good wedding thank-you note is short, specific and sent. Below: when to send it, what every note needs, and wording you can borrow for every kind of gift, from a registry item to a check, a group gift and help from a friend.

When to send wedding thank-you notes

Etiquette guides say to write each note within three months of getting the gift. That is the outer edge, not the target. Notes written while you still remember the gift are easier and warmer, so sooner is better.

A gift that arrives before the wedding is different. Thank them within a couple of weeks, and do not wait for the day.

If you have fallen behind, write anyway. A late note is far better than none.

What every thank-you note needs

  1. Name the gift. Say what it is, in your own words: the stand mixer, the framed print, your gift. A note that just says "thanks for everything" could have come from anyone.
  2. Say how you will use it. One line is enough: where it will sit, what you will cook in it, what the money will go towards. For money, say what it is for, never how much.
  3. Write about them. Mention the person, not just the gift. If they came, say it meant a lot to have them there. If they could not, say you missed them.
  4. Sign off with both names. Finish with your two names, signed by hand if you can. Keep it to a few lines: warm and short beats long and stiff.

How to write a wedding thank-you note in 4 steps

  1. Write down the gift and who gave it. As each gift arrives, note what it is and who it is from, in their words if they wrote any. Do it the same day, while you still remember which card came with which package.

  2. Open by naming the gift. Start with thank you and the gift itself: "Thank you for the stand mixer." For a cash gift or a check, say "your gift" and never the amount.

  3. Say how you will use it, and add a line about them. One sentence on what the gift will do, such as where it will sit or what it will go towards. Then one about the person: it meant a lot to have them there, or you missed them.

  4. Sign off with both names and mail it. Sign with your own two names, by hand if you can. Etiquette guides say to send each note within three months of the gift, and sooner for gifts that came before the wedding.

Wedding thank you card wording for every gift

Every example uses Alex and Sam writing to someone they know. Change the names and the gift, and keep only what is true for you. Two or three tones each: pick the one that sounds like you.

A gift from your registry

Name the item and say how you will use it. They chose it from your list, so a line about using it tells them it was the right call.

Short and warm
Dear Jo and Tom, Thank you for the stand mixer. We made bread in it the very first weekend, and it was gone by Sunday night. Every loaf from now on will remind us of you. Love, Alex and Sam
More formal
Dear Margaret and David, Thank you very much for the set of dinner plates from our registry. We use them every evening, and they make an ordinary supper feel like an occasion. Your kindness, and your company on our wedding day, meant a great deal to us. With warm regards, Alex and Sam

A gift that was not on your registry

Say what a good surprise it was, and why it suits you. Never hint that you would have picked something else.

Short and warm
Dear Priya, Thank you for the hand-painted bowl. It was not on our registry, which makes it even better: you chose it just for us. It sits on the kitchen table, and we see it every morning. Love, Alex and Sam
More formal
Dear Robert and Helen, We were delighted to open your gift, the framed print of the old lighthouse. It has pride of place in our hall and reminds us of the summers we spent near it. Thank you for such a personal choice. With our thanks, Alex and Sam

A cash gift or a check

Thank them for the gift, and say what it will go towards if you want to. Do not write the amount, even to say how grateful you are.

Short and warm
Dear Grandma Ruth, Thank you for your gift and your lovely card. It will go towards the sofa we have been saving for, and we will think of you every time we sit down on it. We love you very much. Alex and Sam
More formal
Dear Frank and Maria, Thank you so much for your gift and the check in your card. We are putting it towards our first home, and we are very grateful for your kindness. We hope to have you over for dinner as soon as we have a table to put you at. With love and thanks, Alex and Sam
Warm and personal
Dear Danny, Thank you for the gift in your card. It is going into our honeymoon fund, and we promise to send you a postcard from the trip. With love, Alex and Sam

If you are not sure what the money will be for, "it means a great deal" is enough. It is a thank-you, not a receipt.

A gift from a group

Write to everyone who joined in, and name them all. If the group is split across households, write a short note to each.

Short and warm
Dear Mia, Ben, Lucy and Theo, Thank you all for the cast iron pan. It was so kind of the four of you to go in on it together, and we love that it came from all of you. Dinner at ours soon. Love, Alex and Sam
More formal
Dear all, Thank you for the set of glasses, a gift from every one of you. We pictured each of you as we unwrapped them, and we will raise a glass to you at our first dinner party. Please accept our warm thanks. With love, Alex and Sam

A gift with no name on it

First try to find out who sent it: ask family, look at the delivery slip or the registry order, and check the packaging. Once you know, thank them as you would anyone. If you cannot find out, say so openly, and pass the thanks on.

Short and warm
Dear Cass, Your mom told us the linen towels were from you. They came with no card, so we were puzzling over it for weeks. Thank you. They are the softest towels we own. Love, Alex and Sam
A line to pass on
To whoever sent the copper pans, There was no card in the box, and we would love to thank you properly. If it was you, please tell us, so we can say it in person. They are already our favorite things in the kitchen. With thanks, Alex and Sam

Pass the second one to family, or post it where your guests will see it. Do not guess and thank the wrong person.

An experience or a gift certificate

Say when you plan to use it. It tells them you will enjoy it, and it saves them wondering.

Short and warm
Dear Noor and Imran, Thank you for the cooking class. We have picked a Saturday in the spring, and we cannot wait. What a fun thing to do together. Love, Alex and Sam
More formal
Dear Walter and Ann, Thank you for the gift certificate to Marlow's. We are saving it for our first anniversary dinner, and we will think of you both when we go. It was a lovely thing to give us. With thanks, Alex and Sam

Help rather than a gift

Someone made the cake, drove the car, played the music or arranged the flowers. Thank them for what they did, and say what it meant to you.

Short and warm
Dear Aunt Claire, Your cake stole the show, and people are still asking about the lemon layers. Thank you for the hours you gave to it. We know how much work it was, and we are so grateful. Love, Alex and Sam
More formal
Dear Rosa, Thank you for arranging the flowers. They made the whole barn smell of summer, and we kept a few to dry on the mantel. Your time and your skill were a gift to us. With our thanks, Alex and Sam

A gift from someone who could not come

Thank them for the gift and say you missed them. Do not thank them for coming, because they did not.

Short and warm
Dear Hannah and Eli, Thank you for the beautiful serving dish. We missed you on the day, and we are so glad you thought of us. Come to dinner soon and we will show you the photos. Love, Alex and Sam
More formal
Dear Uncle Paul, Thank you for your gift and your kind note. We were sorry you could not be with us, and we thought of you during the day. We hope to see you soon. With love, Alex and Sam

A gift that came before the wedding

Send these soon, and keep them about the gift. Leave out the day, because it has not happened yet.

Short and warm
Dear Aunt Beth, Thank you for the linen napkins. They arrived this morning, and we love them. It means so much to have your support as we plan our life together. Love, Alex and Sam
For a shower
Dear Tessa, Thank you for the shower, and for the tea towels. We feel so looked after. We will think of you each time we do the dishes. With love, Alex and Sam
More formal
Dear Colleen and George, Thank you for your kind engagement gift. We were touched that you thought of us, and we are already enjoying the cutting board. With our thanks, Alex and Sam

A gift that arrived months later

It is never too late to say thank you. Say the gift arrived, say thanks, and apologize once if your note is late. Then stop.

Short and warm
Dear Ian, Your gift reached us a little while after the wedding, and it was a lovely surprise. Thank you for the picture frame. It now holds our favorite photo from the day. We are sorry our thanks took so long. Love, Alex and Sam
More formal
Dear Margo, Thank you for the card and the gift. We are sorry to be late in writing, and we hope you will forgive us. The serving tray has been used almost every weekend since it arrived. With love and thanks, Alex and Sam

A gift from your parents or your office

For your parents, thank them for what they did as well as what they gave. For an office, write one note and send it to whoever organized the gift, so they can share it.

To parents
Dear Mom and Dad, You did so much to make our wedding what it was, and we felt it all day. Thank you, for the bar and for everything else. We toasted you more than once, and we love you. Alex and Sam
To an office
Dear everyone at Brightfield, The picnic blanket is perfect, and so are the kind messages in your card. Thank you, every one of you. We plan to take it to the lake this summer and think of you all. With thanks to every one of you, Alex and Sam

What not to write

  • Do not write an amount. Not "thank you for the generous check", and not the figure. Say what you will do with it.
  • Do not compare gifts, or say one was more than you expected. Each note is read on its own.
  • Do not use a title for the two of you, or sign with a joke. Sign with your own two names.
  • Do not say "thank you for coming" to someone who was not there. Say you missed them.
  • Do not apologize for a long time. One "sorry this took a while" is plenty.
  • Do not save the thanks for a group message. A person who sent a gift is owed a note of their own.

Keep track of who gave what

The thank-you list is part of your free Merriwell account. It is for the weeks after the wedding, when the gifts have arrived and the list is long.

  • A list of who gave what and who is left to thank. Every gift goes against a person, so nothing is lost. Any amounts you note stay private to the two of you.
  • A free writing sheet to print, with the note and the envelope name and address together, so you can copy them out by hand.
  • A plain starter note for each person, with no AI needed, written from what you told us about the gift and whether they came.
  • Notes written for you by AI: 10 free tries, then Plus. One try covers drafting every note in one go; each time you ask for a new version counts as one.

The notes use only what you have recorded. They never invent a gift, never name an amount, and never see an address.

Thank-you cards we mail for you are coming later.

Frequently asked questions

When should I send wedding thank-you notes?
Etiquette guides say to write each note within three months of getting the gift. A gift that arrives before the wedding deserves its thanks within a couple of weeks, and you do not need to wait for the day. Sooner is always welcome, but a late note is far better than none.
Should I mention the money in a thank-you note for a cash gift or check?
Thank them for the gift, and say what it will go towards if you like: your first home, the honeymoon, a new sofa. Leave out the amount. Advice differs a little on how much to say about the money, but naming the figure is best skipped.
What do I write if a gift has no name on it?
First try to find out who sent it. Ask family, look at the delivery slip or the registry order, and check the packaging. Once you know, write a normal note. If you cannot find out, say so in a line to family or at your next get-together: "We loved the copper pans and would love to thank whoever sent them." Do not guess.
Should wedding thank-you notes be handwritten or typed?
A handwritten note is still the usual expectation, and the best choice for family and older guests. A typed or printed note, signed by hand, is fine when your list is long. A quick text or email is a good first thanks when a gift arrives, but it does not replace the note. Notes are mailed with a stamp, so leave time for them to arrive.
Can I write one thank-you note for a group gift?
Yes, if you name everyone who joined in. When the group is spread across several households, a short note to each one is kinder. For an office gift, write one note and send it to whoever organized it, so they can pass it round.
What if the gift was late, or I am behind on my notes?
Write anyway. A gift that arrives months after the wedding still gets a note. Say it arrived, thank them, and apologize once if you are late. Please do not save it for your holiday cards, because a note of its own is worth more.
Do I thank someone who did not come to the wedding?
Yes, for the gift. Say you missed them and that you hope to see them soon. Do not write "thank you for coming", because they did not.
Do I thank people for gifts that arrive before the wedding?
Yes, and quickly. Keep the note about the gift and leave the wedding day out of it, because it has not happened yet. Engagement and shower gifts are thanked the same way.
How long should a wedding thank-you note be?
Three or four short sentences is plenty: the gift, how you will use it, a line about them, and thanks again. Warm and short beats long and stiff.
